Following two very competitive seasons with the Ford Mustang GT4 race car in the British GT Championship, the Academy Motorsport is thrilled to make a return to the GT4 European Series next season, with Cowley joining them.
The team had been a competitive force within both the British GT Championship and GT4 European Series for many years, however following the Covid19 pandemic its European campaign was halted. Following another successful season in the British GT Championship, during which the team claimed multiple GT4 race wins, as well as securing second place in the GT4 Drivers’ Standings, the Academy Motorsport outfit is eager to make a return to Europe.
Now something of an Academy Motorsport stalwart, Cowley has truly cemented himself as a strong competitive driver in the GT ranks. With experience in both the British and European GT4 championships, it will be great to see him return to the team in 2022.
Commenting on the announcement, Matt Nicoll-Jones, Academy Motorsport’s Managing Director, said: “It’s brilliant to welcome Matt back to the team for another season. He has raced with us for a number of years now, in both British GT and the GT4 European Series, so we know how capable he is of delivering winning results. We’re in a great position with the car, and to have Matt onboard, who knows the car very well, makes us a strong competitive element within both championships.”
The team has proven how competitive the Ford Mustang GT4 race car is, now it is time to show what it can do on a European platform. With Cowley at the wheel, it will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with.
Matt Cowley said: “2022 will be my fourth GT4 season with Academy Motorsport and my third in the superb Multimatic Ford Performance GT4 Mustang. The past two years have really reinforced the Mustang’s strong pace since its introduction in 2019. After a challenging start to the season this year, we outscored the British GT4 champions in the final five races giving us second place in the overall GT4 championship, a great result for the team.
“Having raced GT4 in Europe with Academy Motorsport in 2019 as an AMR Academy driver, I’m really looking forward to a double championship opportunity in 2022, with a return to Europe as well as campaigning the British GT4 championship.”
The team is looking for a silver graded driver to join Cowley in the driving seat for both the GT4 European Series and British GT Championship. Drivers interested in the available seats with Academy Motorsport, please contact the team directly:
