Day in the sun as Racing Spirit of Léman tops Pre-Qualifying

+ Result: Pre-Qualifying, Hockenheim

Jamie Day shone brightest underneath the scorching German sun, putting the #82 Racing Spirit of Léman Aston Martin out front in Pre-Qualifying at Hockenheim.

The British driver did just enough to dip beneath the best time from Free Practice earlier, but his best of 1:47.374 was still half-a-second better than his rivals.

Ivan Ekelchik led the times initially in the #91 Wimmer Werk Porsche that had topped practice, but this time he and Nicolaj Møller-Madsen couldn’t hold on at the top as the laptimes tumbled and temperatures rose. Nelson Panciatici took a turn out front in the Code Racing Alpine before Day set his best just before running was interrupted by a red flag to clear the Teichmann Continental Racing Toyota from the gravel.

Once running resumed, Day handed across to Mateo Villagomez for the final minutes, but improvements proved rare. Pedro Carvalho Ebrahim brought the #11 Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport BMW up to second, edging past Panciatici’s time with Max Bird and Dexter Patterson completing the top four after an impressive run in the #96 Mahiki Racing Lotus Emira GT4.

Tom Lebbon was fifth fastest in the championship-leading Elite Motorsport McLaren he shares with Josh Rattican, with Erik Evans and Marco Signoretti rounding out the top six in their Academy Motorsport Ford Mustang.

Pascal Huteau and Laurent Hurgon returned the Schumacher CLRT Alpine to the front of the Am class in a strong seventh overall, well clear of Charles Dawson and Andy Cantu in the #16 NM Racing Team Mercedes-AMG. Florent Grizaud and Kevin Jimenez were third in their GPA Racing Aston Martin.

Lestrup Racing’s BMW in the hands of Victor Bouveng and Joakim Walde set the pace in Pro-Am, Bouveng’s time putting the car clear of a quartet of Porsches. The W&S Motorsport Caymans of Tano Neumann/Alon Gabbay and Max Kronberg/Finn Zulauf were second and third, with Julien Briche/Jean-Laurent Navarro fourth and the Nova Racing car shared by Daniel Nilsson/Edvin Hellsten fifth.

Qualifying for the GT4 European Series Powered by RAFA Racing Club is set for 10:10 local time on Saturday, July 20.
